Lawn Aeration

When it comes to lawn care, mowing the grass is only the beginning of proper lawn maintenance. In order to have a lush and beautiful lawn that stays green during the summer months, there are some things that need to be done. One of the most important parts of proper lawn care is lawn aeration. Lawn aeration is the act of punching tiny holes into the lawn. By punching these small holes over the entire lawn, you are allowing the root system of the lawn to receive air. Just like any other living things, grass needs to breathe in order to be healthy. Grass, if left in its natural state, will grow together forming a thatch layer. Breaking through this layer is important for your lawn in order to become vibrant and beautiful. Lawn aeration also allows water and nutrients to get to the roots where it is needed to ensure proper growth.

Signs That Your Lawn Can Benefit From Aeration

  • Water pooling after watering- If you notice a pool of water on your lawn after watering, it is a sign that your grass is not getting proper moisture penetration. Your lawn has grown together too tightly blocking water from getting to the root system.
  • Runoff- While your lawn is being irrigated you notice that the water starts to run off after only a few minutes. This is a sure sign that your lawn needs to be aerated.
  • Your lawn looks worn- When people walk on your lawn over and over again in the same general area it creates a worn area that resembles a footpath. This compacts the lawn which is never good.

It drys out easily- If you notice that after watering your lawn it still looks dried out, it is probably time to aerate.

Proper Lawn Aeration

Many people struggle with what time is the right time to aerate their lawn. The best time to conduct this beneficial task is during the growing season. This will allow the grass to heal. Once you have determined a date to perform lawn aeration, make sure that the entire area has proper moisture. A great time to aerate your lawn is after it has rained or a few hours after you have watered it. There are a few different ways that you can aerate your lawn.

A spike aerator tool can be used to punch holes in your lawn. This device is normally a hand-held unit that contains tiny spikes. While this method of aeration is better than simply doing nothing, plug aerator the next method is a much better choice. Another way to aerate your yard is with a hand-held plug aerator that removes small plugs from your lawn. This creates a larger hole than the spike method which allows more water, air and nutrients to get to the root system. If you have a large yard you can rent a large aeration machine that will get the job done fast. But a better idea is to have your local lawn service come out and do the job for you, so you don’t have to hassle with operating an unfamiliar piece of equipment. Once your lawn has been aerated, remember to continue with your normal lawn maintenance procedures such as mowing and watering.
