About MU Extension

The goal of the University of Missouri Extension is to use the knowledge that is science-based for engaging individuals to help them with understanding the basics of change, solving problems, and making informed decisions. It is a partnership involving the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture with Lincoln University, MU campuses, and the citizens of Missouri via the extension councils in their respective counties.

As a land-grant university since the enactment of The Morrill Act in 1862, MU is one segment of a nationwide mission that is federally mandated for carrying the university’s research benefits beyond the campus as per earlier legislation. And then, in 1887, agricultural experiment stations were established at land-grant universities, including MU, thanks to the Hatch Act. Currently, MU is conducting extensive research at its research centers and farms statewide to aid agricultural producers and ensure a safe food supply. Luckily, lawn services and citizens across the country get to benefit from this research that is available at their fingertips that to their website.

Valuable Lawn Care Research

The MU website contains a wealth of information for comprehensive lawn care, as well as properly maintaining healthy shrubs, trees, and even houseplants, including:

Lawn Care Research

This UM page covers all kinds of research relating to lawn care and landscapes. It contains a long list of active links to complete lawn care and garden guides covering everything needed for growing a lush green lawn. There is so much that is covered here, from lawn aeration to choosing a lawn treatment, that is of great value to anybody wanting to grow and maintain a perfect green lawn. All it takes is time. And, if you don’t have all that time, just call your local lawn service and let them handle it all for you.

Managing Lawns & Turfgrasses

Growing turfgrasses like Bermudagrass, zoysia, fescue, ornamental grasses, and other ground covers that are viable for the Midwest can be complicated for many homeowners. This Master Gardener Core Manual is loaded with great information.

Weed Identification

This page offers a user-friendly Weed ID Guide for finding just the weed that you’re having a problem with. Weeds make grass care difficult and can damage or destroy your lawn, so correctly identifying what type of weed you have is crucial. So, this page has a massive list of weed types and links to each one so that you can use the right weed control products in your lawn treatments. You can even download a free app for iPhones, iPads, and Android devices to identify weeds. The app is available from Google Play and Apple App stores.

Weed Publications

If the weed identification page and its long list of weed species don’t solve your problem, then there’s always this page that offers additional weed publications for you to look into. It provides links to pages for lawn service pros as well as many related publications for homeowners. From symptoms of various injuries to trees and shrubs to tips on protecting your water quality when establishing or renovating your lawn, it’s all covered. Just click on the links, and they’ll get you there.

Now here is everybody’s least favorite subject, unless you’re an entomologist, of course. Assuming you’re not, however, you probably don’t care much for insects, especially when they are destroying your lawn. And, there’s a link to a special publication devoted exclusively to turfgrass insects which provides everything you need to know about keeping your lawn as insect-free as possible. It covers everything from mowing to watering, as well as an insect anatomy lesson.

Lawn maintenance and keeping your yard looking good is difficult at best when you have to deal with weeds and insects, but the numerous diseases that lawns and plants are prone to can make it twice as hard. So, the purpose of this page is to help you identify the disease that is wreaking havoc on your yard and point you in the right direction for fixing it. Using the plant disease ID form, you can send a sample to MU, and they will identify it for you.

Nothing makes a yard complete like trees and shrubs. And, the fact is that there are so many to choose from, it can make your head spin. You want to be sure that you are selecting the best option for the climate as well as the size of your yard and the overall look that you’re going for. This page can help you with all of that and more. Flowers and Houseplants

Nothing makes a house a home more than an array of houseplants. They also increase the oxygen in the air for healthier breathing. But, that’s no longer a problem if you read the info available on some of the links on this page. You can learn all about taking care of houseplants from buying to watering, lighting, and everything in-between.
